Generations of experience

A J Construction aims to provide its clients with the highest quality product, structurally and visually. We see to it that our work is to industry and engineered spec, to ensure a product lasts its expected lifetime. With over three decades spent working around Durango, our grasp of the soil, rock and hydrologic behavior is astute, giving us a leg up on the competition.

A second generation has moved its way into a leading role at A J Construction, led in part by Chris Clerici. Chris continues his own family construction legacy. Growing up in Durango, Chris has worked in construction his entire life, beginning with Clerici Construction. From projects at Fort Lewis College in those days to Project Management of large developments near Purgatory, Chris has twenty five years of dirt work experience in Durango.

enTrenched in the San Juan Mountains

A J Construction's origins stem from the heart of the San Juan Mountains. Terry James, the founder of the company, was introduced to heavy equipment, operating snowcats, dozers and skidders for Purgatory Resort in the early 1980's. With the purchase of a hoe-attached dozer and a dump truck, he humbly began James Excavation in 1989. In the mid 90's, the company took on the title A J Construction when the Andersen brothers became partners. As of 2024, Terry James and Mark Andersen continue to oversee operations of the company, which has grown over 35 years, establishing itself as a lead player in Durango's excavation game.
